Sometimes, life feels like an uphill battle. The character in this week’s Short Film Sunday, Walter, perfectly embodies the struggles that come with those hard times—and the journey that follows.
Some of you may be familiar with Studio Ghibli, the creators behind my favorite childhood film, My Neighbor Totoro. This short film mirrors the signature visual style they pioneered, scratching that soothing part of my brain that makes their work so captivating.
Studio Ghibli’s art style is known for its immersive realism, blending fantasy with grounded elements. Their sound design keeps viewers engaged, drawing them into the world they create. I find the charm in the imperfect cuts and subtle sound cues—it makes the experience feel more alive.
If you haven’t seen My Neighbor Totoro, I cannot recommend it enough.
On a personal note, this story hit home at this stage in my life. I’m in the middle of making some big changes—job, location, hair color, style, you get the gist. Walter’s uphill battle mirrors my own. Without spoiling the film, there is a happy ending, but that’s not what makes it compelling. I’ve realized I don’t just want to see characters drive off into the sunset—I want to see them live the life they worked so hard to obtain.
This mindset of focusing on the destination sometimes keeps me from appreciating the journey. The important part is being present, putting in the work, and making sure the ending is worth it. Preferably somewhere I can be tan.
Tune in next week for another edition of Short Film Sunday. I might miss a week here and there, but I’m committed to bringing you 52 great films this year. Enjoy.
