Bonjour,
That’s the extent of my French-speaking skills, aside from a few bits of football culture I’ve picked up from European smokers I’ve met throughout my time. This week’s Short Film Sunday features the first animated short, French Roast. The film delivers plot twists and emotional depth using very few words, making the facial expressions speak for themselves.
Speaking of French culture, I had my own café adventure the other morning. My local coffee shop usually has fresh baguettes on Fridays, and I always try to grab one as an end of week glutinous cap. Unfortunately, their oven is currently out of order, which meant no baguettes this time. It was a sad moment, but I consoled myself with a croissant, which is always a great alternative.
The situation became even more jolting when I tried to pay for my croissant. The tap-to-pay system was not working, and the man ahead of me, Charlie, discovered this first. He was a kind older gentleman with TV dilemmas and multiple tabs to settle. I tried my best to talk him through his new cable box issues, and resorted to the tried and true method of unplugging every cord he can, and just plugging it all back in hoping it will fix itself.
Despite the hiccups, Charlie and I agreed that coming back to pay would be worth it, especially if it meant another chance to enjoy freshly baked treats.
Grab a coffee, maybe a pastry, and take a few minutes to watch French Roast. Let me know your thoughts in the comments, and join me next week for another Short Film Sunday.
